Hancock County lies immediately east of Indianapolis in central Indiana, with Greenfield as its county seat. Flat to gently rolling farmland and the Blue River shape much of the county, while Interstate 70 has encouraged suburban and industrial growth along its northern corridor. Created in 1828 and named for John Hancock, the county developed from an agricultural settlement into part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Hancock County had about 91,000 residents in 2025. Its present-day economy combines farming with manufacturing, distribution, health care, retail and construction tied to regional growth.
