Greenfield is the county seat of Hancock County, about 20 miles east of Indianapolis along the historic National Road and near Interstate 70. The city grew as a trade center for surrounding farms after rail connections reached the community in the 19th century. Greenfield is the birthplace of poet James Whitcomb Riley, whose home and the annual Riley Festival remain prominent parts of its cultural identity. The city had about 26,500 residents in 2025. Manufacturing, logistics, health care, retail and local services share the economy with a historic downtown centered on Main and State streets.
