Indiana is a Midwestern state stretching from Lake Michigan south to the Ohio River, with Indianapolis near its center as the capital and largest city. Its landscape changes from dunes and industrial shoreline in the north to broad glacial plains across the center and wooded hills in the south. Indiana entered the Union in 1816 as the 19th state, and the name Hoosier has long been associated with its residents. The state had about 7 million residents in 2025. Manufacturing remains central to its economy, alongside agriculture, life sciences, logistics, technology and tourism.
