County or equivalent
Location overview
Coös County covers the northernmost part of New Hampshire and is the state’s largest county by land area. Lancaster is the county seat, while Berlin, Colebrook, Gorham and smaller communities are spread across the White Mountains, Great North Woods and Connecticut River valley. Much of the county consists of forest, mountain terrain, lakes and sparsely settled land near the Canadian border. Coös County was organized in 1803 as northern New Hampshire developed around timber, farms and river communities. Forestry, paper-making history, outdoor recreation, tourism and regional services remain important to the area.
