Lehigh County is located in eastern Pennsylvania, within the Lehigh Valley region, approximately 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City. The county is bordered by Carbon County to the north, Northampton County to the east, Bucks County to the southeast, Montgomery County to the south, Berks County to the southwest and Schuylkill County to the northwest. Allentown, the county seat and largest city, anchors the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area alongside neighboring Bethlehem and Easton. The county’s landscape is defined by the Lehigh River, which flows southward through Allentown before joining the Delaware River, and by the rolling hills of the Great Valley and the Blue Mountain ridge along its northern edge. Interstate 78, U.S. Route 22 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension make the county a major transportation and logistics hub, supporting a diverse economy centered on manufacturing, healthcare, education, warehousing and distribution. Lehigh County covers approximately 345 square miles of land and had 374,557 residents at the 2020 census, making it one of Pennsylvania’s most populous counties.
