Sumner County is located in north-central Tennessee, immediately northeast of the Nashville metropolitan area along the Kentucky border. It is bordered by Robertson County to the west, Macon County to the east, Trousdale and Wilson counties to the south, Davidson County to the southwest, and Allen County, Kentucky, to the north. The county seat is Gallatin, while other major municipalities include Hendersonville, Goodlettsville (partly), Portland, White House (partly) and Millersville (partly). The Cumberland River and Old Hickory Lake shape much of the county’s landscape, providing extensive waterfronts, recreation and water resources. Interstates 65 and 65-adjacent corridors, together with U.S. Highways 31E and 31W and State Route 386 (Vietnam Veterans Boulevard), connect the county to downtown Nashville and southern Kentucky. Once dominated by agriculture, Sumner County has become one of Tennessee’s fastest-growing suburban counties, with an economy centered on healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, retail, education and professional services while retaining significant farming and equestrian operations. The county encompasses approximately 529 square miles of land and had 196,281 residents at the 2020 census, making it one of the state’s largest counties by population.
