Tennessee is a landlocked state in the Southeastern United States, stretching from the Appalachian Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains in the east across the Cumberland Plateau and rolling interior highlands to the Mississippi River floodplain in the west. It is bordered by Kentucky and Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi to the south, and Arkansas and Missouri across the Mississippi River to the west. Nashville is the state capital and largest city, while Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga are the other principal metropolitan centers. Tennessee is traditionally divided into the three Grand Divisions of East, Middle and West Tennessee, which reflect distinct geography, settlement patterns and regional identities. The state is a major center for healthcare, automotive and advanced manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, tourism, higher education and music, particularly country music in Nashville and blues and soul music in Memphis. Tennessee covers approximately 41,235 square miles of land and had 6,910,840 residents at the 2020 census.
