Gallatin is a city in Sumner County in north-central Tennessee, about 30 miles northeast of Nashville and within the Nashville metropolitan area. It is the county seat of Sumner County and developed around a traditional courthouse square after being established in 1802. The city was named for Albert Gallatin, who served as U.S. treasury secretary under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Gallatin lies near the Cumberland River and Old Hickory Lake, with State Route 386 and U.S. Route 31E providing major connections to Hendersonville, Nashville and surrounding communities. Its historic downtown remains centered on the Sumner County Courthouse, while newer residential, commercial and industrial development has expanded outward as the Nashville region has grown. Gallatin’s economy includes manufacturing, healthcare, education, retail, logistics and government services, and the city is home to Volunteer State Community College. Gallatin had 44,431 residents at the 2020 census and covers approximately 32 square miles of land.
