Location overview
Duchesne County spans part of northeastern Utah’s Uinta Basin, with the city of Duchesne serving as its county seat. The Uinta Mountains rise along its northern edge, and the Duchesne, Strawberry and Uinta rivers cross a landscape of high desert, ranchland, reservoirs and alpine country that includes Kings Peak. Much of the county lies within the Uintah and Ouray Reservation; homesteading expanded after 1905, and the county was organized in 1914. Duchesne County had about 20,900 residents in 2025. Livestock, agriculture, oil and natural gas production, construction and outdoor recreation remain central to its economy.
