Goodyear is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, located in the western portion of the Phoenix metropolitan area about 17 miles west of downtown Phoenix. The city extends south from the developed Salt River Valley into the foothills and desert terrain surrounding the Estrella Mountains, producing a long municipal footprint that includes established neighborhoods, newer master-planned communities, industrial districts and large areas of undeveloped Sonoran Desert. Interstate 10 crosses northern Goodyear and connects it with Phoenix, Buckeye and the wider metropolitan region, while Arizona State Route 303 runs along the city’s western side. Goodyear was founded in 1917 after the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. acquired land to grow cotton used in tire production, and it incorporated in 1946. The city covers about 191.3 square miles of land, had 95,294 residents at the 2020 census and was estimated to have 118,186 residents in 2024, reflecting rapid suburban growth.
