Arizona is a state in the Southwestern United States, bordered by California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California, with the Colorado River forming much of its western boundary. Phoenix, the state capital and largest city, anchors the state’s primary metropolitan area, while Tucson, Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Glendale and Flagstaff are other major population centers. Arizona’s geography ranges from the Sonoran Desert in the south and west to high-elevation forests and mountains in the north and east, including the Mogollon Rim, the White Mountains and the San Francisco Peaks. The state is home to the Grand Canyon, one of the world’s most recognizable natural landmarks, as well as extensive tribal lands, national forests and protected desert landscapes. Arizona’s economy is driven by technology, semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, tourism, mining and agriculture. The state covers approximately 113,594 square miles of land and had 7,151,502 residents at the 2020 census.
