Kinston is a city and the county seat of Lenoir County on the Neuse River in eastern North Carolina’s Coastal Plain. Founded as Kingston in 1762, it is one of the state’s older inland towns and became a regional center for the surrounding tobacco- and farming-based countryside. The city remains the county’s principal commercial and cultural center, with the African American Music Trail, the CSS Neuse museum and a revived downtown food and arts scene among its distinctive attractions. Kinston had an estimated population of 19,705 in 2025, about 0.5% below the 2020 estimates base. Manufacturing, health care, retail and agriculture-linked businesses remain important, while the nearby North Carolina Global TransPark anchors aviation, aerospace and logistics activity.
