Prince George is an unincorporated census-designated place and the county seat of Prince George County, located in southeastern Virginia about 25 miles southeast of Richmond and immediately south of the independent city of Hopewell. The community is centered on the Prince George County courthouse and government complex along Courthouse Road, rather than around an incorporated municipal government or traditional commercial downtown. It lies within the Richmond metropolitan area near Interstate 95, Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 460, with surrounding development consisting of county offices, schools, residential neighborhoods, farmland and wooded tracts. The courthouse area has served as the governmental center of Prince George County for generations, and the historic courthouse complex includes buildings dating principally from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Prince George was first defined as a census-designated place for the 2010 census and had 2,315 residents at the 2020 census.
