Palouse is a small city on the Palouse River in southeastern Washington, about 15 miles north of Pullman. Rolling wheat fields surround the community, while wooded slopes to the east mark a transition toward the forests of northern Idaho. The city took shape in the late 19th century as rail connections, lumber and trade served farms across the surrounding Palouse country. Palouse counted 1,015 residents in the 2020 census. Its historic downtown supports small businesses, arts and community events, while agriculture and nearby outdoor recreation remain central to local life.
