Whitman County occupies the southeastern corner of Washington, with Colfax as its county seat and Pullman as its largest city. Windblown loess forms the rolling hills of the Palouse, while the Snake River cuts deep canyons along the county’s southern edge. Indigenous peoples, including the Palouse and Nez Perce, have longstanding ties to the region; farming and railroads later transformed its towns and open countryside. Whitman County had about 48,500 residents in 2025. Wheat and pulse crops remain economic mainstays, joined by agricultural services and the education and research centered at Washington State University.
