The San Diego Community College District geographic area covers about 196 square miles entirely within the city of San Diego and is home to more than 1 million residents. It is an educational district footprint rather than a municipality, extending across urban neighborhoods, coastal and inland communities and major employment centers. The district traces its roots to the founding of San Diego City College in 1914 and became independent from the city’s school system in 1972. Its principal campuses include San Diego City, Mesa and Miramar colleges, along with seven College of Continuing Education locations.
