Early on Sept. 12, 2025, the Town of Waxhaw discovered irregularities in its government IT network and brought in North Carolina’s Joint Cybersecurity Task Force to investigate and secure affected servers. Officials said the cybercriminal activity, detected in Waxhaw, North Carolina, was intended to disrupt systems; some town servers were accessed, but there is no confirmation that personal data was stolen. Town operations remain on normal hours, emergency services were never interrupted, and contingency processes are in place for any impacted services.

The response includes outside experts from the NC National Guard, the NCLGISA Cybersecurity Strike Team, NC Emergency Management, and the NC Department of Information Technology, which together form the state’s Joint Cybersecurity Task Force established under Executive Order No. 254. The task force provides coordinated incident response and technical assistance while forensic work continues to restore systems and harden defenses.
