Boyne City, Michigan, said it is investigating a cybersecurity incident discovered earlier this week that affected limited parts of its computer network and digital systems. Officials said emergency and critical infrastructure were not affected.
The investigation leaves open questions about whether basic City Hall services, including public records, payments, permitting and staff communications, were disrupted. Boyne City is a Charlevoix County community of about 3,825 residents on Lake Charlevoix in northern Michigan.
The city said the incident affected “limited portions” of its computer network and digital systems, according to a Facebook notice posted by the city and provided to DysruptionHub.

The city said it began working with information technology professionals and cybersecurity specialists after discovering the issue. Officials said the specialists were assessing the situation and securing affected systems.
Officials said they are still determining what systems may have been affected and whether any data may have been compromised. The city said the full extent of any breach is not yet known because the investigation is ongoing.
The city did not identify specific public services that were unavailable, limited or operating under workarounds. Residents were encouraged to monitor the city’s social media channels and website for future updates.
Officials have not publicly confirmed ransomware, a threat actor, data theft or a ransom demand. DysruptionHub did not find a public ransomware claim tied to Boyne City in web searches reviewed for this story.
Boyne City is among several Michigan municipalities to report cyber-related disruptions in recent years. Orangeville Township said a cybersecurity incident affected its network functionality before a forensic review found no evidence that township data was impacted. Flint said an August 2024 cyberattack disrupted online bill pay, phone service and other municipal systems, though emergency services were not affected.
The city had not responded to a DysruptionHub request for comment by publication time.
The investigation remains ongoing. The city has not said when affected systems will be fully secured or restored.
