A cyberattack breached Heber City’s local government network in Utah on Saturday, prompting containment work before systems were reported fully back online Thursday.
No essential services were suspended, a Heber City spokesperson told KUTV, which reported the breach Thursday.
The city’s IT team was alerted to the attack and “took steps to stop and contain it expeditiously,” the spokesperson told the station. The spokesperson said there was no concern about further spread.
The FBI was helping conduct a forensic investigation, KUTV reported.
The city’s website, hosted separately in the cloud, was unaffected. Residents could continue paying bills and using other services through heberut.gov, the spokesperson said.
Heber City is the seat of Wasatch County in northern Utah’s Heber Valley, southeast of Park City.
In Bernalillo, New Mexico, a separate cyberattack blocked online water-bill payments and closed the town’s motor vehicle office. Bernalillo officials said Thursday that police and fire services continued and directed residents to pay bills in person or by phone.
The city has not said how long local systems were unavailable or identified the affected computers and applications. It has not publicly identified ransomware or a responsible group. Whether municipal information was accessed or removed remains unknown.
