Lincoln County is located in midcoast Maine along the Gulf of Maine, extending from the lower Kennebec River eastward to the Muscongus Bay region. It is bordered by Kennebec County to the north, Waldo County across the Penobscot Bay region to the northeast, Knox County to the east, Sagadahoc County to the west, and Cumberland County across Casco Bay to the southwest. The county seat is Wiscasset, while other notable communities include Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta, Newcastle, Waldoboro, Bristol and Edgecomb. The county’s geography is defined by a deeply indented coastline of tidal rivers, estuaries, peninsulas and offshore islands, including the Boothbay Peninsula, the Damariscotta River estuary and the Pemaquid Peninsula. U.S. Route 1 serves as the principal transportation corridor, linking the county’s historic villages and harbor communities. Lincoln County’s economy centers on tourism, commercial fishing and lobstering, boatbuilding, aquaculture, healthcare, small manufacturing and maritime services. The county encompasses approximately 456 square miles of land and had 38,493 residents at the 2020 census.
