Municipality
Location overview
Salt Lake City is Utah’s capital and largest city, set between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Range. City Creek descends from the mountains through downtown, and nearby canyons provide a dramatic backdrop as well as access to hiking and skiing. Mormon pioneers established a permanent settlement in 1847, laying out a broad street grid around Temple Square, and rail and mining growth later made the city a regional commercial center. Salt Lake City had about 218,400 residents in 2025. Finance, health care, technology, education, transportation, conventions and outdoor tourism shape its modern economy and culture.
