Salt Lake County occupies the heart of Utah’s Wasatch Front, with Salt Lake City as its county seat and largest community. The urbanized Jordan River valley lies between the Wasatch and Oquirrh ranges, while mountain canyons descend toward the wetlands and open water of the Great Salt Lake. Indigenous peoples traveled and lived in the valley long before Mormon pioneers arrived in 1847; the county was organized three years later. Salt Lake County had about 1.2 million residents in 2025. Finance, technology, health care, education, manufacturing, logistics and tourism support the state’s largest metropolitan economy.
