The city of Noblesville, Indiana, says an intrusion into its computer network led to unauthorized access to personal information, prompting officials to take some systems offline and notify law enforcement.
City officials said they detected suspicious activity on or about Nov. 22, 2024, and took “certain systems offline” while bringing in outside specialists to support an investigation. The city said it also notified and is cooperating with law enforcement.
On Nov. 27, 2024, the city said its investigation determined personal information “was accessed and acquired by an unauthorized party.” Officials said the forensic review remained ongoing and that they had not yet identified all affected individuals or the specific data involved.
In a state breach report, the incident is listed as affecting 1,841 people in total, including 1,797 Indiana residents. The same filing lists an incident date of Oct. 22, 2024, and a notification date of Jan. 7, 2025.
The city’s website includes a posted notice dated Jan. 7 that directs residents with questions to a toll-free response line.
Officials have not publicly described which municipal services were disrupted or confirmed whether the incident involved ransomware or data theft beyond the city’s statement that personal information was accessed.
Some outside reports have pointed to unverified online claims by the Interlock ransomware group, but the city and law enforcement have not confirmed any ransomware involvement.
Noblesville is the county seat of Hamilton County and a suburban city north of Indianapolis, with a population of about 69,600 in the 2020 census.
