Cyberattack Shuts Down Valdosta State University Network in Georgia, Disrupting Operations

Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia, is working to recover from a cyberattack that disrupted its network and systems on December 28, 2024, forcing a campus-wide shutdown of internet, Wi-Fi, and technology services. The attack prompted the university’s cybersecurity team to initiate containment protocols, isolating the network to prevent further damage.

University officials said the breach has left campus computers, workstations, and classroom technology inaccessible, with reduced operations implemented on January 8. While online classes remain unaffected, in-person classes require modifications until systems are restored. In coordination with the University System of Georgia and an independent security firm, the IT and cybersecurity teams are conducting a thorough analysis to identify vulnerabilities and secure sensitive data.

The University stated it has not yet determined if personal information was exposed in the breach. Staff and students have been notified to monitor updates as the recovery process continues. Despite the disruptions, the university confirmed that spring classes would begin as planned on January 13.
