Unusual IT activity disrupted network drives, printing and external internet access at Weld Re-8 School District in Colorado on Sept. 13, the district said.
In a notice to staff, the district said it secured and isolated affected systems, activated its incident response plan and began an investigation with law enforcement.
Google Workspace and Infinite Campus, the district’s cloud-based systems, were unaffected, according to the notice.
Weld Re-8 is a public school district based in Fort Lupton, northeast of Denver. Colorado education data list six schools and roughly 2,400 students in the district.
The district did not specify which schools or offices lost access to the affected services.
The district has not said whether anyone accessed systems or data without authorization. It has not identified malware, described the event as ransomware or named an attacker.
The disruption follows a cyberattack at another Colorado school district, Salida, which damaged locally stored files while cloud services stayed available. Weld Re-8 has not reported comparable file damage or described its incident as an attack.
The district said it was working to restore normal operations. As of Sept. 30, it had not published a technical all-clear or a date when the affected services were restored.
