Community College of Beaver County, north of Pittsburgh in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, locked down campus technology Monday after officials warned the school was facing an encryption-based “cryptolocker” attack targeting college data.
In an internal message shared with the campus community and reported by KDKA Radio, the college said it was “currently under attack” by “bad actors” using an “encryption based attack on our data (cryptolocker).”
The notice said college resources would need to be locked down to limit damage. It also instructed employees not to turn on laptops or other devices on campus, warning they “can and likely will be attacked” by the malicious software.
KDKA Radio reported the incident Monday and noted students and faculty were on spring break this week, which could limit immediate disruption to classes.
The college has not publicly said which systems were affected, whether any information was accessed or taken, or how long outages could last. Officials did not use the word ransomware in the message, and DysruptionHub is not labeling the incident beyond what the college described.
DysruptionHub did not see a public restoration timeline in the initial reporting, and the school did not respond to an email seeking comment. As of publication, there has been no public claim of responsibility.
Education networks in Pennsylvania have faced repeated cyber disruptions in recent years. In December 2025, the Minersville Area School District shut down parts of its computer network after officials said they detected attempts to install malware, leading to multiple days of canceled classes while the district investigated. In late October 2025, the University of Pennsylvania disclosed a breach involving “select information systems” and said it had contacted the FBI. And in November 2024, a ransomware attack caused internet and network outages at the Interboro School District in Delaware County, with recovery issues lingering afterward.
CCBC is a public community college based in Center Township near Monaca, serving Beaver County in the Greater Pittsburgh region.
Institutions dealing with encryption-based attacks typically isolate affected networks, preserve forensic evidence and work to restore systems from backups while assessing potential data exposure before bringing services back online.
