Cyberattack Targets Arkansas City, Kansas Water Treatment Plant

On Sunday, September 22, 2024, Arkansas City, Kansas, experienced a cyberattack targeting its water treatment facility. An employee discovered the attack around 5:30 a.m. when a suspicious message appeared on a computer screen instructing them to contact an email address, indicating a ransomware incident. City officials, including Communications Director Shana Adkisson and City Manager Randy Frazer, assured residents that the water supply remains safe and unaffected. As a precaution, the facility has switched to manual operations while cybersecurity experts and government agencies, including Homeland Security, investigate and work to restore systems.
