Hillsborough County is located in southern New Hampshire, occupying a central position between the Merrimack Valley and the state’s southwestern uplands. It is bordered by Merrimack County to the north, Rockingham County to the east, Essex and Middlesex counties in Massachusetts to the south, Cheshire County to the west and Sullivan County at its northwestern corner. The county has two county seats—Manchester, New Hampshire’s largest city, and Nashua, the state’s second-largest city. Other municipalities include Amherst, Bedford, Goffstown, Hollis, Hudson, Merrimack, Milford and Peterborough. The Merrimack River flows north to south through the county, connecting Manchester and Nashua, while the western portion features more rugged terrain, forests and numerous lakes and ponds. Hillsborough County is New Hampshire’s most populous county and serves as the state’s primary economic center, with industries including healthcare, education, technology, advanced manufacturing, financial services and retail. The county encompasses approximately 876 square miles of land and had 422,937 residents at the 2020 census
