Location overview

Boise is Idaho’s capital and the principal city of the Treasure Valley in the southwestern part of the state. It lies along the Boise River, between the Boise Foothills to the north and the broad valley and bench lands to the south. The city developed in the 1860s near Fort Boise as a service center for nearby mining settlements and later grew into a center of state government, education and commerce. The river and its greenbelt remain defining features of the urban landscape.
