Houston is the largest city in Texas and the principal city of a metropolitan region near the upper Texas Gulf Coast. Most of the city lies in Harris County, with smaller portions extending into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. Founded along Buffalo Bayou, Houston grew around a network of waterways that now connects its urban core with the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay. Houston had an estimated population of 2,397,315 in 2025, about 4.2% above the 2020 estimates base. Energy remains central to its economy, complemented by international trade, health care and medical research, aerospace, technology, finance and manufacturing.
