Kearney Public Schools said its network was compromised by a cyberattack discovered Friday, Oct. 10, 2025, in Kearney, Nebraska. District officials said Sunday, Oct. 12, that phones, email and other network-dependent systems will remain offline as recovery continues with help from external experts. Classes will proceed Monday, Oct. 13, but digital tools will not be available and families should contact schools in person. “We understand this may cause inconvenience and appreciate your patience and support as we work through this situation,” a KPS spokesperson said.
Officials did not identify the intruder or the method of compromise. The district said in-person operations will continue while systems are restored and asked families to plan for alternative communication.
No prior publicly reported cyberattacks against Kearney Public Schools surfaced in a review of local coverage and district communications. Nebraska districts have reported related incidents recently, including several warnings to families about a PowerSchool data breach in January 2025, a $1.8 million vendor-payment phishing loss at Broken Bow Public Schools this spring, and a 2024 cyberattack that disrupted Winnebago Public Schools.
