Cyberattack Forces Pinehurst Radiology in North Carolina to Close Indefinitely
Pinehurst Radiology Associates, based in Pinehurst, North Carolina, has closed indefinitely following the detection of suspicious network activity on February 4, 2025. The radiology practice initiated an investigation with legal counsel and cybersecurity experts after identifying the threat. As a result, systems remain offline, halting appointments for mammography and ultrasound services. Patients needing MRI or PET scans are being redirected to First Imaging. The specific nature of the cybersecurity threat remains unclear, and Pinehurst Radiology is collaborating with federal, state, and local law enforcement as the investigation continues.
The closure has disrupted patient care in the region, though FirstHealth of the Carolinas, a partner organization unaffected by the cyberattack, has expanded its imaging services to accommodate affected patients. This incident adds to a growing trend of cyberattacks targeting radiology practices nationwide, with recent breaches reported at University Diagnostic Medical Imaging in New York, East River Medical Imaging PC, and Mt. Baker Imaging in Washington. Pinehurst Radiology, which employs 13 radiologists and two physician assistants, has not indicated when operations will resume.
