City officials said they halted an attempted cyberattack Tuesday after a single employee email account in Piqua, Ohio, was compromised and used to send impersonation emails. The City of Piqua’s IT Division secured the account and reported no access to municipal systems, data or programs. The incident occurred Oct. 7 and involved malicious emails sent to the user’s contacts and those who replied to the impersonator, according to the city and local media.

Officials urged residents and partners not to click suspicious links, to verify email senders through normal channels, and said they will update the public if needed. The city has previously warned of staff-impersonation scams, underscoring the ongoing phishing risk facing local governments.
