Cyberattack Shuts Down Bonneville School District Network in Idaho Falls
A cybersecurity incident on Thursday, June 20, led Bonneville Joint School District 93 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to shut down its entire network, including phone and internet services across all schools and administrative buildings. District officials, alerted by cybersecurity firm Arctic Wolf, took immediate action to isolate systems, halting access to platforms such as email, Google Workspace, and student information systems. Superintendent Scott G. Woolstenhulme confirmed that no data was compromised during the breach, and the FBI is now involved in the investigation.
The shutdown has significantly disrupted three of the district's summer school programs, including online courses that are entirely dependent on network access. Students at Lincoln High School will receive passing grades if they completed over 65% of their coursework, while in-person special education programs continue with limited impact. The district had already been collaborating with cybersecurity experts prior to the attack, and officials credit their swift response for preventing data theft. This marks the most serious cyber incident in District 93’s recent history, following an earlier PowerSchool-related breach this year.
