Cyberattack Disrupts School Communications at Oregon's Central Point School District
Central Point School District 6 in Central Point, Oregon, experienced a cybersecurity incident on May 14, 2025, that disrupted its communications systems, including phones, internet, and email. The district reported that unauthorized access was detected early Wednesday, prompting immediate activation of cybersecurity protocols and isolation of affected systems. Superintendent Walt Davenport notified families that the outage was expected to last most of the school day and that schools remained open using backup communication methods, such as cellular service and two-way radios.
The attack on Central Point School District 6 follows a national surge in cybersecurity incidents targeting schools. Since late April, districts in Flemington, New Jersey; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Coweta County, Georgia; and Bartlesville, Oklahoma have reported similar disruptions affecting testing, internet access, and school operations. Locally, Central Point also experienced a cyberattack in November 2024 when the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center was temporarily shut down by a breach. While no group has claimed responsibility for the current school district incident, federal and local authorities are investigating potential connections to these broader regional and national cyber threats.
