Green River, Wyoming, Ransomware Attack Cripples City Computer Cystems

A ransomware attack has disabled computer systems for the City of Green River, Wyoming, disrupting administrative operations and forcing staff to accept only cash payments at public facilities. The incident was confirmed June 25 by Finance Director Chris Meats, who said there is currently no evidence that data was accessed or stolen. “At this point, there is no evidence of a data breach or exfiltration,” Meats told SweetwaterNOW. “It has crippled our systems.”

The attack appears limited to Green River’s municipal network. Local agencies including the Joint Powers Water Board, Sweetwater County School District No. 2, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Rock Springs reported no related disruptions. To support city operations, the Sweetwater Combined Communications Joint Powers Board deployed a temporary, isolated network for the Green River Police Department to maintain law enforcement reporting. Officials have not released details about the ransomware’s origin, any ransom demands, or whether outside law enforcement agencies are involved.

This is the second major ransomware incident targeting a public institution in Wyoming this year. On Jan. 7, the Laramie County Library System in Cheyenne was briefly knocked offline by a similar attack that disabled servers and digital services. Library IT staff restored operations the same morning by reverting systems to a previous state.
