Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Reports Cyber Incident

County officials said Friday, August 8, 2025, that the government network experienced a “cybersecurity incident” earlier this week. In Spartanburg, South Carolina, offices remain open, but some online services are temporarily unavailable as staff work to restore systems. The county said its software platforms, a cybersecurity vendor, and law enforcement responded immediately and that the event was quickly contained; 911 and emergency communications are operating normally.

As part of containment, certain network connections and electronic services were proactively disabled while recovery continues. This marks the second significant disruption in less than three years: Spartanburg County reported a ransomware attack on April 27, 2023, that caused extended service issues and drew an FBI investigation that ran into 2024. Officials have not attributed the current incident to ransomware or named a threat actor.
