Ransomware Attack Disrupts Health Services in FSM

A ransomware attack struck the Yap Department of Health Services in Colonia, Yap, Federated States of Micronesia, on March 11, 2025, at 3 p.m., forcing officials to take the entire network offline. The attack disrupted internet connectivity, disabled email communication, and shut down digital health systems. As a precaution, all computers were turned off to prevent further damage. The department is working with the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs and private IT contractors to assess the extent of the breach and restore affected systems.

The Federated States of Micronesia, an independent nation in free association with the United States, relies on digital infrastructure for healthcare operations, making the attack particularly disruptive. Despite the incident, health services remain operational, though delays are expected. Officials have assured the public that patient care will continue and urged patience as recovery efforts progress. The department has pledged to provide updates as the situation develops.
