Florida is a state in the southeastern United States, occupying a long peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and sharing land borders with Alabama and Georgia to the north. Tallahassee is the state capital, while Jacksonville is the largest city by population; Miami, Tampa, Orlando, St. Petersburg and Fort Lauderdale anchor several other major metropolitan areas. Florida’s generally low-lying landscape includes sandy coastal plains, extensive wetlands, springs, lakes, pine flatwoods and more than 1,300 miles of coastline. The southern part of the state contains the Everglades and the Florida Keys, while the central peninsula includes a broad lake district and a limestone landscape marked by sinkholes and freshwater springs. Major waterways include the St. Johns, Suwannee, Apalachicola and Kissimmee rivers, and Lake Okeechobee is the state’s largest freshwater lake. Florida is divided into 67 counties, covers about 53,625 square miles of land and had 21,538,187 residents in the 2020 census.
