Location overview
Florida is a southeastern U.S. state whose peninsula separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. It borders Alabama and Georgia to the north, and Tallahassee is its capital. Its low-lying landscape includes coastal plains, wetlands, lakes and freshwater springs, with the Everglades and Florida Keys in the south. The St. Johns River is its longest river, and Lake Okeechobee is its largest freshwater lake. Florida became the 27th state in 1845 and has 67 counties.
